Joy As Strategy: How Authentic Expression Activates Good Fortune
Creation, joy, and self-expression are not luxuries. They are the mechanisms through which your life force and good fortune activate.
It’s often said that when the student is ready, the teacher appears. However, I think another appropriate variation of this is, “When the student is ready, the lesson appears.”
Apparently, I must be ready because an important lesson has arrived. This lesson not only shook me to my core, but it felt like the missing piece to a very large puzzle.
JOY.
That’s it.
Simple, yet satisfyingly complex.
To be more specific, when you shift from resistance to joy, life opens up in so many advantageous ways.
Over the last couple of weeks this message has been LOUD and unavoidable. Things have shifted into place, I experienced true alignment, the signs, symbols, and synchronicities have been undeniable, and the feelings have been…intense, in a good way.
Let’s explore this together.
Joy Is Not Escape, It's Alignment.
We are all familiar with joy in one way, shape, or form. The issue is that many of us (myself included) treat joy as an escape, rather than a necessary part of life and success.
With so much going on in the world and the predominant emotion being a mix of fear, anger, and anxiety, joy hasn’t really been able to find a seat at the table. To take it a step further, many are in a state of survival, and you’d be hard-pressed to find survival and joy in the same room.
But here’s the thing: joy is alignment, and we see exactly what this means, and how to achieve it by examining the fifth house in astrology.
In your natal chart, the fifth house governs self-expression, romance, and children. Personally, I like to call the fifth house “the fun house” because it’s where we take life less seriously.
In this house, self-expression reigns supreme. The sign and planetary ruler of this house can tell you who you are at your core (without all the bells, whistles, and masks) and how you express yourself outwardly. The fifth house essentially gives you a full read on yourself.
To take it a step further, there’s a concept in traditional Hellenistic astrology called the planetary joys. Each planet has a specific place in the natal chart that is called the place of its “joy.” It’s where they rejoice, essentially.
The fifth house is the place of joy for Venus.
We’re all pretty much familiar with the characteristics of Venus - relationships, love, money, fairness, beauty, etc.
Venus rejoices in the fifth house (also known as the place of Good Fortune) because there’s nothing more joyful or beautiful than being yourself, expressing yourself authentically, and indulging in play, romance, and childlike wonder.
What this tells us is something simple yet powerful: joy is neither random nor frivolous. It is a signal.
Joy is what happens when you are in alignment with your truest self — when your inner world and your outer expression are no longer in conflict. When you are no longer performing, forcing, or surviving…but simply being.
And when that alignment is present, something interesting happens.
Energy returns. Clarity sharpens. Movement begins.
This is why the ancients associated the fifth house not only with joy, but with Good Fortune. Not because life suddenly becomes perfect, but because when your life force is flowing freely, resistance decreases — and when resistance decreases, life responds differently.
As a result, you make clearer decisions. You recognize opportunities more easily. You start to move with yourself instead of against yourself.
But here is where many of us get it wrong…
We wait for joy to arrive after success, after stability, and after everything is “figured out.”
But the fifth house and Venus teach the opposite: Joy is not the reward, it’s the alignment that makes movement, and ultimately success, possible.
When you allow yourself to express authentically, to create, to feel, to experience life beyond survival, you're not escaping reality — you are returning to yourself. And from that place, life begins to open up in ways that force alone could never produce.
The Personal Turn
The thing about these lessons that appear when you’re ready? They rarely come solely from a book; rather, they come from lived experience. The beauty of astrology is that it’s always quietly working in the background, until it’s ready to emerge and enlighten you.
My identity has been in the mechanic’s shop since 2018, when Uranus first entered Taurus, which is the sign of my first house. The first and fifth houses are linked by a trine, which is just fancy astrology-speak meaning they go together beautifully.
Additionally, my natal Sun is in my fifth house of Virgo.
Long story short, the last couple of years have been about rediscovering myself. There have been twists, turns, changes in appearance, and a whole new outlook on life.
The most surprising part, however, has been who exactly is emerging.
This new me is really the old me, but better…aka my inner child.
By waking her up, getting reacquainted with her, and now letting her run the show, I’ve come to realize that she knows exactly what I need, when I need it, and how to move forward successfully.
Interestingly, what she has always wanted is simple: to create, to express, to lead with authenticity, and to experience life fully, not just survive it.
Somewhere along the way, like many of us, I drifted from that knowing. Responsibilities grew, pressure mounted, life starting life-ing, and survival took priority. And while survival keeps you moving, it rarely allows you to feel alive. Joy becomes secondary, expression becomes mutual, and worst of all, you start performing instead of being.
But when alignment returns, something shifts.
You begin to trust yourself again. You stop forcing what isn’t meant for you. Your energy moves differently — steadier, clearer, more certain.
And perhaps most importantly, you begin to notice that life responds — quietly, but unmistakably.
The more I’ve allowed myself to express authentically, the more things have begun to flow. Leaning into joy — not as escape, but as alignment — has clarified my direction, softened resistance, and made movement feel natural. In many ways, this is what the ancients called good fortune — not perfection, but life moving with you instead of against you.
This is still unfolding. But one thing is certain:
When you return to yourself — truly — you move differently. And when you move differently, your life begins to open with you.
The Universal Message
What I’ve come to understand is that this isn’t just my story — it’s a pattern.
Many of us were taught that life moves through effort alone. Push harder. Do more. Endure longer. And while effort has its place, force alone rarely creates alignment. In fact, the more disconnected we are from ourselves, the more force we tend to use — and the more resistance we encounter.
This is where joy becomes misunderstood.
Joy is often treated as something optional — something we allow ourselves after the work is done, after stability is secured, after life feels safe. But the wisdom of the fifth house suggests the opposite:
Joy is not the reward. Joy is the realignment.
When you allow yourself to create, to express honestly, to engage with life beyond survival, you restore connection to your own life force. And when your life force is flowing, clarity increases, decisions sharpen, and movement becomes possible.
This is why authentic self-expression matters so deeply. Not because it looks good. Not because it feels nice. But because it aligns your inner world with your outer life — and when those two are in harmony (hello, Venus!), life begins to respond differently.
You start to notice opportunities where you once saw obstacles. You move with intention instead of reaction. You feel guided rather than forced.
This is not about constant happiness, nor is it about escaping reality. It is about returning to yourself — and from that place, allowing your life to move in a way that is aligned, intentional, and alive.
And perhaps that is the deeper meaning of joy: not fleeting pleasure, but the quiet signal that you are in rhythm with yourself.
Closing Reflection
Perhaps joy has been misunderstood all along.
Not as something frivolous or fleeting, but as something foundational. A signal. A quiet guide back to yourself.
In a world that often rewards urgency, pressure, and constant motion, choosing alignment can feel unfamiliar. Slower. Softer. Yet, it is often the very thing that restores clarity, energy, and forward movement.
Joy does not remove life’s challenges. It does not promise perfection. But it does something equally powerful — it reconnects you to yourself. And when you are connected to yourself, you move differently. You decide differently. You live differently.
Maybe joy is not something we wait for.
Maybe it is something we allow.
And maybe, in allowing it, we return to the part of ourselves that has always known the way forward.
Because sometimes, the path does not begin with force — but with alignment. And often, alignment begins with joy.
Something To Think About...
Where in your life is joy quietly asking to be allowed?
